There are a lot of studies out there that tell us that we need to exercise our brain to stave off diseases and conditions like dementia and Alzheimer’s. To stay sharp we should play word games, solve puzzles, and even memorize lyrics and movie dialogue. While mental exercise is important, a recent studies show that it’s physical exercise that really makes the difference.

In a recent research presentation at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress, new studies show that what it good for the body is also highly beneficial for the brain. Patients who participated in the study not only improved their fitness level but the exercises also had brain boosting effects.

The study included a very specific demographic: overweight, sedentary adults. The group had an average age of 49. The group participated in bi-weekly sessions of intense interval training for 4 weeks. Both cognitive function and cardiac output were recorded and both improved. The participants also improved their long term health, reducing their risk for heart disease and stroke.

If you’re concerned about your brain and want to stay active and sharp, you can also visit the Alzheimer’s Association’s page about brain health. They have several tips on how to take a whole body approach that includes physical activity, nutrition, social activity, and mental exercises.
